Definition of Human Geography
  • The study of the patterns and dynamics of human activity on the landscape. Broadly conceived, human geography includes both those areas of geographic study that are more narrowly focused on human activity, and those that are particularly concerned with human-environment dynamics, or the nature–society tradition (W. Moseley et al., 2007)
  • ‘That part of the discipline of geography concerned with the spatial differentiation and organization of human activity and its interrelationships with the physical environment’ (R. J. Johnston et al., 2000).
  • Human geography is concerned with the distribution and networks of people and cultures on Earth’s surface. 
    • A human geographer might investigate the local, regional, and global impact of rising economic powers China and India, which represent 37 percent of the world’s people. They also might look at how consumers in China and India adjust to new technology and markets, and how markets respond to such a huge consumer base.
    • Human geographers also study how people use and alter their environments. When, for example, people allow their animals to overgraze a region, the soil erodes and grassland is transformed into desert. The impact of overgrazing on the landscape as well as agricultural production is an area of study for human geographers.
    • Finally, human geographers study how political, social, and economic systems are organized across geographical space. These include governments, religious organizations, and trade partnerships. The boundaries of these groups constantly change. nationalgeographic
  • Human geography Geography is generally defined as the science which describes the earth's surface, its form and physical features, its natural and political divisions, climates, and productions. This broad-ranging discipline has numerous points of contact with the natural and the social sciences. So, In a nutshell, Human Geography can be defined as the study of the interaction between human beings and their environment in particular places and across spatial areas.

The Vance Model of Transport Development

Based on his work on the eastern seaboard of America, Vance (1970) developed a five-stage ‘mercantile’ model to illustrate the development of transport links and the growth of the urban hierarchy in North America (Figure 3.6). Although primarily concerned with trade, his model is important in that it stresses the impact of exogenous forces on the evolution of transport networks and their associated spatial patterns. The Vance Model of Transport Development In the initial stage, an accumulating of wealth in Europe prompted overseas expansion of an exploratory nature. Stage 2 sees the beginnings of the transatlantic trade routes based on the one-way trade in staple products such a fish, furs and timber. From 1620, permanent settlement occurs in North America; this results in Atlantic trade in both directions as settlers begin to produce commodities for export and consume manufactured products from a rapidly industrialising Europe (stage 3).
