Temperature Belts of the World

There are three different zones in earth arises due to the temperature difference these are called Heat zones of the earth.
  • These are Torrid Zones, Temperate zones and Frigid Zones.
  • These heat zones are further divided into north Torrid Zone, south Torrid Zone, North Temperate Zone, South Temperate Zone, North Frigid Zone, and South Frigid Zone
Heat Zones of the World

Torrid zone-The Hottest Heat Zone

  1. It is the largest of the thermal zones and it covers almost half the area of the earth’s surface.
  2. The sun’s rays are almost vertical throughout the year in this zone.
  3. The mid-day sun is overhead at equator on equinoxes, i.e. on 21 st March and 23rd September. It is also overhead at Tropic of Cancer on 21st June and at Tropic of Capricorn on 22nd December.
  4. The duration’s of day and night are always equal i.e. 12 hours each on the equator and they increase to 13 hours 27 minutes at tropics.
  5. Torrid Zone lies between Tropic cancer and Tropic of Capricorn.
  6. North torrid zone-Lies between equator and tropic of cancer.
  7. South torrid zone-lies between equator and tropic of Capricorn

Heat Zones of the World

Temperate Zone-Moderate Temperature

  1. Temperate zones have moderate temperature and this zone is suitable for the human population to grow.
  2. When it is summer in the northern hemisphere it is winter in the southern hemisphere and vice versa.
  3. The sun is never overhead In this zone in winter season, the nights are longer and days are shorter and vice versa in summer.
  4. North Temperate Zone -North Temperate zone lies between tropic of cancer (23.50º North) and Arctic circle (66.50º North).
  5. South Temperate Zone- South Temperate zone lies between tropic of Capricorn (23.50º South) and Antarctic circle (66.50º South).

Frigid zones- The Coldest Heat Zone

  1. The surface remains permanently frozen under thick snow.
  2. This zone is very cold because here the sun does not rise much above the horizon, suns rays are always slanting and provide less heat.
  3. During the winter season, the sun does not rise above the horizon for almost six months.
  4. North Frigid Zone-Lies between Arctic Circle (66.5º) and North pole (90° North).
  5. South Frigid Zone-Lies between Antarctic Circle (66.5º) and south Pole (90° South).
